Binge Eating And Eating Disorders

By Ronda H. Maynard

For most people, the holiday season is a wonderful time of year. It is often a time of family reunion, socializing, and celebration - a time when families, friends, and coworkers come together to share good will and good food. The season is meant to be bright, happy, and full of the best of relationships. Yet, for those who suffer with eating disorders, this is often the worst time of the year. For those who are trapped in the private hell of anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, the Holidays often magnify their personal struggles, causing them great internal pain and turmoil.Over the past few years, during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season I have felt horrible. I felt trapped and like the food was out to get me. I lied on endless occasions to avoid all of the parties and big dinners that go along with the holidays. I felt horrible about my body and did not want anyone to see me eat for fear they would make judgments about me." Eighteen-year-old woman These quotes from women suffering from anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating reveal the emotional intensity they feel during the holiday season. Their fear of gaining weight and becoming, in their minds, fat, gross, and disgusting, is the monster they must deal with every time they partake of any of the foods that are so wonderful and common to the holidays.

Why are eating disorders the greatest killers among the many different psychological disorders? This is because of the media, as well as the disorder's dramatic and deadly affects on the body. Today, media is in our lives no matter where we go. From television, radio, and the news, to magazines, newspapers, and the internet, media plays a big role in the spreading ideas, norms, and styles to people. Media spreads information really quickly to millions of people. Media is around people no matter where they turn, and they face it on a daily basis in some form. So, how is media related to eating disorders? This question, and many other questions, will be answered after we get a better understanding of what an eating disorder is, its characteristics, statistics, and ways to prevent and treat it. I will, however, focus only on anorexia and bulimia because they are more affected by the media than overeating disorders are.People with eating disorders obsess about their intake of food, and they spend a lot of time thinking about their weight and body image. Their body is badly affected both emotionally and physically. People with an eating disorder may suffer from a number of different symptoms, and not everyone gets the same symptoms as they vary from individual to individual. According to the Help Guide-Mental Health Issues, even though anorexia is the most revealed eating disorder in the media, bulimia is the most prevalent eating disorder.

"Unlike any other normal teenager, I always hated it when the holiday season would roll around. It meant that I would have to face my two worst enemies - food and people, and a lot of them. I always felt completely out of place and such a wicked child in such a happy environment. I was the only person who didn't love food, people, and celebrations. Rather, holidays for me were a celebration of fear and isolation. I would lock myself in my room. Maybe no one else gained weight over the holidays, but just the smell of food added weight to my body. My anorexia destroyed any happiness or relationships I could possibly have had." -Nineteen-year-old woman

"The holiday season is always the most difficult time of year in dealing with my eating disorder. Holidays, in my family, tend to center around food. The combination of dealing with the anxiety of being around family and the focus on food tends to be a huge trigger for me to easily fall into my eating disorder behaviors. I need to rely on outside support to best cope with the stresses of the holidays." -Twenty-one-year-old woman

Some of the painful consequences of binge eating and bulimia are found in the time, planning, and dishonesty that is required to protect and cover up their eating disorder during the holidays. They often feel hatred for themselves for the ongoing deception to family and friends to excuse or explain their behaviors. In addition, they live in constant fear of being "found out" by their significant others, or in fear of continually letting others down because of their inability to stop their compulsive behaviors. Family and Friends - Turning Potential Triggers into Gifts of Support Holiday ideals epitomize what is good about family and other personal relationships. Activities during this time of year can involve family members and friends in intense and often emotional ways. Unfortunately, those with eating disorders can find it terrifying to be emotionally close with other people. In such situations they may feel vulnerable and unsafe, and then revert to their eating disorder to restore a sense of control and self-protection.

So many celebrities suffer and have died from eating disorders. Singer Karen Carpenter was struggling with anorexia and bulimia and after she went to treatment for years, everyone thought that she had recovered and was doing better. After that, she was found dead on the bathroom floor in her parent's house. She had a heart attack and it was said that the result of it was because she had abused the drug Ipecac for years. Ipecac is a liquid that is used to induce vomiting, and it is often abused by anorexics and bulimics.

Cognitive behavioral therapy allows psychologists to see the patient's thought process, interpersonal therapy involves dealing with difficult relationships with others, rational emotive therapy involves studying a patient's unhelpful beliefs, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy involves looking at a person's past experiences. All of this information can help a psychologist find the problem, and come up with the solution to the problem. Group therapy is a helpful part of treatment that allows sufferers of the similar eating disorders get together to discuss their problem. Groups are able to discuss coping strategies, ask and answer questions, and talk about ways to change their behavior. Medical treatment is necessary in order to make sure that the patient receives full treatment. Drugs such as anti-depressants can be prescribed by an experienced doctor who knows your condition in order to help treat your illness. Nutritional counseling is another effective and good way to help treat eating disorders. Dieticians and nutritionists can help patients understand what a well-balanced diet is and what foods they should eat on a daily basis. Nutritional counseling can also help patients face their fears about food and get over their fears of being afraid to eat.

The importance of these quotes from clients in treatment for anorexia is found in their honest expression of the tremendous pressure and conflict they feel inside in response to the normal food and social activities of the season. Their internal suffering and pain are often hidden from those around them by their continual remarks about "being fat," or may also be hidden in their patterns of avoidance and withdrawal from social involvements."The secrecy and lying make it very difficult for me during the holiday season. I have to decide whether to restrict my food or to binge and then sneak away to purge." -Twenty-two-year-old-woman."Having an eating disorder during the holidays presents quite a contradiction in my mind. I anticipate all the food and get excited, while at the same time I dread the many family members around. I feel that the family is over to "watch". I know that they simply want to reach out and help, but I feel that a big help would be to make a concerted effort to shift the holiday focus from the food to the underlying purpose. I wish the food could be a minor deal, just an accessory to the holiday, rather than the focus." -Twenty-year-old woman

It is not your job to fix or solve the eating disorder. It is your job to encourage nourishment of the body and provide nourishment to the soul. Working too hard to stop the eating disorder behaviors during the holidays can fuel dishonesty and defensiveness which actually feeds the problem. You are not responsible to say or do everything right. Nothing you do or not do will take away your friend or family member's own responsibility to overcome and recover from their eating disorder. She/he is the only one who can do that job, but you can care, empathize, encourage, and share the process with them. The good intent you express is often more helpful than what is actually said or done. If your friend or family member knows that your heart is on their side, then you become a source of comfort, support, and safety to them. These general holiday suggestions by patients and professionals are not a complete list, but they do emphasize some positive approaches to help and support someone suffering with an eating disorder. The specific ideas, strategies, and agreements that can come out of your interactions with your loved one before and during the holidays will allow these ideas to be personalized and unique for each situation. Remember also, that the person struggling with the eating disorder has her own list of positive things that she can do to help her through the holiday season as well. We hope this article is helpful in better understanding the significant and difficult ordeal those who suffer from eating disorders will face at this season of the year. We hope this awareness and understanding will help us identify the best gifts of the holidays for those we love and care so much about at this time of year.

Personally, I don't think that the media will ever be an effective resource for people to learn the truth and to learn about eating disorders. The media spreads a lot of false information and people tend to misinterpret the messages they hear on TV. Companies try to sell us products that will reduce our weight and make ourselves look "beautiful" by spending millions of dollars on advertisements. Consumers spend a lot of money and time trying to lose weight and buying these products that are not what the body needs. I believe that our bodies know what they need and ever one's body is different. Everyone has a different metabolism and shape, and we have to learn how to love ourselves for who we are. We need to teach children at a young age that what they say on TV is not what it is cracked up to be and that they need to have self confidence, because if they don't create an image for themselves, the media will do it for them.

By Amy Benson

While this certain disorder is not anything new, it has seen a significant uptick in regularity, specifically among youthful people, such as students. At Castlewood treatment center, eating disorders, especially in the young, are their most important focus.

What many people do not realize regarding an eating disorder is that it can be very serious. People without a knowledge of these disorders might possibly disregard them as simply a phase that a person is under-going. However, you will find more intense explanations why an eating disorder could possibly present itself and there are very straightforward dangers pertaining to people who have these disorders. Not only can they encounter significant health conditions as a consequence of their disorders, but in even more advanced cases of eating disorders, this condition can end up being fatal.

At Castlewood TC, you will find a wide variety of different treatment programs. The main reason for a wide variety of methods of treatment is because not all the individuals who are encountering eating disorders experience them in a similar manner. Several might require a more intense method of treatment while some might not essentially need such attention.

Which is why treatment centers offers treatment methods from residential care to outpatient care. Even though residential therapy is reasonably straightforward, outpatient care delivers many various levels when it comes to healing those with eating disorders. One of the most frequent forms of outpatient therapy is intensive outpatient treatment. However, you will also find organizations that are sanctioned by Castlewood and this would represent a less intensive form of outpatient care.

Many people have questions about the treatment of not only eating disorders but other psychological conditions. These inquiries center on the different phases of therapy. If a person is in distress because of their eating disorder, it's advisable to believe that residential treatment is the most suitable choice. However, what's in dispute, in many cases, is how an individual will fare when the time comes to transition to a much less rigorous method of treatment. With many treatment centers, this issue is usually addressed with a pair of very specific forms of therapy.

The first form of transitional treatment is identified as stabilization. This specific treatment can be done before residential care begins or immediately after the residential stage of their treatment is over. This therapy allows for monitoring of the patient as well as reinforcing coping skills and allowing them to continue on with their normal schedule of therapy. Another very well liked method of transitioning is referred to as step down therapy. This is generally to acclimate the patient to a newer and less intensive form of treatment that they have grown accustomed to while in residential care.

Not only can eating disorders take a great toll on those that suffer from them, it can also take a tremendous toll on the family members and loved ones of those individuals who are battling this disorder. It's good to know that many treatment centers will take this into account.

While the focus of the attention will go to the person with the eating disorder, Castlewood offers what is known as family week. This three day long event concentrates not only on the person dealing with the disorder but it focuses on the support mechanism that the family can be when the residential phase of treatment is over.

The Right Eating Disorder Inpatient Treatment Centers Will Give Outpatient Support Too

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

By Lindy Bischoff

Exactly what are eating disorders? There are many kinds of eating disorders including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, Compulsive Over-eating and Excessive Dieting. There are compulsive overeating treatment centers and eating disorder treatment centers with anorexia treatment programs that will not just identify what kind of eating disorder you could have but also help to find what the underlying cause could be. More often than not a concerned family member will bring their loved one in simply because they see some of the self-destructive signs of an eating problem and want help identify the condition and also to get suggestions of treatment.

It's been discovered that most eating disorders don't just turn up overnight. It usually builds in to a disorder after a while. The most typical cause is anxiety combined with depression. The beginnings usually will start when people are young where anxiety sets in when the young person starts to be worried about problems. Frequently when this worry overcomes them they lose energy and will eat something sweet to provide themselves an enhancement of energy. Over time the individual can come to depend on "binge eating" to get a boost of energy, then they will start to make themselves throw up since they worry that the eating will make them fat.

Do eating disorder centers treat the actual cause of the eating problem? Unfortunately not all centers will attempt to treat the main cause of the eating problem, but instead will simply focus on governing the food intake and preventing the symptoms of the eating problems.

The very best centers will combine treating the symptoms of the eating problem and psychological treatments for the anxiety and depression that's normally the real cause of the problem. It is advisable to ensure that the therapy center you choose has programs available to combine their treatments to stand a better chance of affecting a long term treatment for the problem, and not just a quick fix.

Are all eating disorder inpatient treatment centers? The easy answer is no. With that said, the reason that most eating disorder treatments start with an inpatient program is that as soon as the individual with the issue is convinced to seek help the concern is very severe. By having the individual live at a treatment facility as the initial focus on the main problem is being treated, the doctors can more effectively control the quantity of food that is available to the patient and also keep a closer eye as the person learns to deal with their problem by a means other than eating.

Once the person has gone through the inpatient program, they're most often enrolled in an outpatient program for at least a year in order to monitor how well the patient is dealing with real life without going back to eating in an effort to solve their problems. The outpatient treatment program will usually involve regular meetings with the patient to discuss how everything is going and to see if they are being influenced to return to the previous eating problems to try and deal with things going on in their life. Eating Disorders Are Associated With Over-Exercise

Sunday, March 4, 2012

By Victor Hood

In the English-speaking and European culture, the perfect image of women, if we are to ask today's trend-makers, is for them to be as svelte as little girls. My partner of over 30 years was just as appalled, and we both came to the realization that today's women are fostering unrealistic expectations when it comes to their figure, all because the likes of America's Next Top Model and Victoria's Secret, among others are telling them that the difference between skinny and sexy is just the letters in the middle.

And it is also sad to note that women are more susceptible than ever to eating disorders and unreasonable exercise regimens that could lead to life-threatening or even fatal conditions.

Here are the most commonly developed eating disorders:

Anorexia nervosa is a life threatening disorder that occurs when you eat very little food and become obsessed about your weight even when you are badly underweight. A person with anorexia will consider herself as fat or overweight when standing in front of a mirror despite the fact that she has precious little weight holding her bones up. They wouldn't care if they are well below 80 pounds (lighter than even a 12-year-old child of normal weight), as long as they don't look "fat" - and would take as much diet pills or even laxatives as they deem necessary to this end.

As for bulimia, this is an eating disorder where the sufferer gorges himself/herself on food before withdrawing everything out just like that. A person who suffers from this condition would eat anything, and that means anything, including junk food, and will purge the food out by means of laxatives or by means of vomiting. This is a dangerous practice that could upset the body's balance of minerals in the bloodstream and could be hazardous to the heart.

While not remotely as dangerous as bulimia and anorexia nervosa, the process of seconding compulsive overeating with compulsive over exercising is not healthy and could manifest itself psychologically as well. This particular disorder involves eating a hearty amount of food, often of the unhealthy kind, followed up by an unreasonably long and intense exercise routine.

It is estimated that more than one out of three collage female athletes may at one time develop an eating disorder. If you are one of the many people out there who suffer from an eating disorder, it is advised that you seek medical assistance - you wouldn't want to join Gia and Karen up there in the big runway and concert hall, respectively, in the sky.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

By Beth Roberts

What exactly are eating disorders? There are many kinds of eating disorders including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, Compulsive Over-eating and Excessive Dieting. There are eating disorder centers with anorexia treatment programs and compulsive eating disorder treatments that will not only identify what sort of eating disorder you may have but in addition helps to find exactly what the underlying cause might be. Most of the time a concerned family member will bring their family member in simply because they see some of the self-destructive signs of an eating problem and want help identify the problem and also to get suggestions of treatment.

It is often found that most eating disorders don't just pop up overnight. It usually builds in to a disorder over time. The most frequent cause is anxiety joined with depression. The beginnings usually will start in childhood where anxiety begins once the young person starts to worry about problems. Usually when this worry overcomes them they lose energy and can eat something sweet to give themselves an enhancement of energy. As time passes the individual will come to depend upon "binge eating" to get an enhancement of energy, then they will begin to make themselves throw up since they worry that the eating will make them fat.

Do eating disorder centers treat the root cause of the eating problem? Unfortunately not all treatment centers will try to treat the reason for the eating problem, but instead will only work on governing the intake of food and preventing the symptoms of the eating problems.

The very best centers will combine treating the symptoms of the eating problem and psychological treatments for the anxiety and depression that is normally the root cause of the problem. It is advisable to make sure that the therapy center you decide on has programs for eating disorders set up to combine with other necessary treatments to stand a better possibility of affecting a longer term solution to the problem, and not simply a fast fix.

Are all eating disorder centers inpatient treatments? The simple answer is no. With that said, the reason why most eating disorder treatments start with an inpatient program is that once the individual with the problem is convinced to find help the concern is very severe. By having patients live at residential eating disorder treatment centers as the initial work on the main problem is being treated, the doctors can more effectively control the quantity of food that's available for the patient and also keep a better eye as the person learns to deal with their problem by a means other than eating.

Once the person has gone through the inpatient program, they're most often signed up for an outpatient program for around a year in order to monitor how well the patient is coping with real life without returning to eating as a way to solve their problems. The outpatient treatment program will usually involve regular meetings with the patient to discuss how everything is going and also to find out if they're being influenced to return to the previous eating problems to try and cope with things taking place in their life. The patient usually has the benefit of an emergency phone number with someone they can call if they feel they require help to not eat when some challenge comes up in their daily life.

What assistance is available after you complete the eating disorder treatment centers program?
